SIGHTSEEING TIPS

There is a long list of things to do and see in Dublin, but we have compiled a list over our favourites and we think you will enjoy them too.
Dublin is not huge, so a great way to get to know the city is actually going on a sightseeing tour bus. It may sound a bit corny, but it is a great way to get a nice overview of the city. You can also book tours to go outside the city to visit castles and beautiful nature. Dublin Bus and Irish City Tour have good offers. For a total overview of Dublin sightseeing, accommodation etc, take a look at the Dublin Tourist website. If you are planning to do serious sightseeing you might want to consider purchasing a Dublin Pass, which can also be combined with bus ticket offers.

If you like whiskey, it is worth to take some time off to go to the old Jameson distillery. The best whiskey shop in the country is on Dawson Street by Stephen’s Green in the centre of Dublin, which is a good place to pick up tasty gifts. If you are leaning more towards beer, a trip to the Guinness brewery is an absolute must. Even if you are not crazy about beer, visiting the brewery is still a great idea, especially because of the great view from the brewery bar, which overlooks the entire city. The place has a great gift shop too.

The two most famous churches in Dublin are the St Patrick's Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral. Note that they are Anglican (Church of Ireland), not Catholic.

Kilmainham Prison is no longer a prison, but now functions as a really nice museum. Tourist busses stop here.

Trinity College is right in the city centre and is worth a visit. You can see the Book of Kells and the beautiful Harry Potter-ish library, or just take a walk around the grounds.

Temple Bar is the oldest part of Dublin right on the south banks of the river Liffey. It can be quite the tourist trap, but in spite of the crowds it is still worth a visit. You will find plenty of pubs and nice restaurants, but to get the real pub experience you have to leave the Temple Bar area.

Gub Dandys, part of Brady’s bars, is a true pre-television pub. They used to have a lot of traditional music, but now unfortunately it is at a more irregular basis. It is still worth a visit, though, even though it is a bit out of city centre (southside).

Johnnie Fox's pub in the mountains right next to the church of our wedding. It is a curious place, and even though it is very busy with tourists in the summer, it still has a great atmosphere and very nice food (seafood specialities). The location is beautiful. An obvious place to visit while you are still in Blessington.

Dublinia is a Viking world heritage centre. Dublin was founded by Vikings (go Danes!) about 1000 years ago, and a visit to Dublinia will take you through the founding of Dublin, monasteries and much more.

Dublin Castle has been the heart of Dublin since the founding of the city. To know more about this central Dublin site, here is some brief history.

Phoenix Park is a massive park on the north-west side of the city. Here you can watch horse polo, cricket, gaelic football, wild deer and much more. The American ambassador has a residence here along with the Irish president.

Dublin Zoo is in Phoenix Park and it is the fourth oldest scientific zoo in the world. A really nice zoo with elephants, giraffes, and primates-we think that you'll enjoy it.

National Museum of Ireland is a great place with free admission. If you are into archaeology and history, you will really like this place.

Glendalough is a beautiful area with lakes, located south-east of Blessington in between the mountains. Originally the area was the home for monks back in the 4th century, but the Vikings dropped by about 1000 years ago. There are now some ruins left and a nice little museum, but most importantly the nature is beautiful. There are plenty of opportunities for nice hikes in the mountains and a good view is guaranteed.

Powerscourt was a castle for the Anglo-Normans back in the 12th century, but it is now presenting as a mixture of castle history, architecture, gardens, decadence, nature, shopping, and good food. It is located east of Blessington, and is worth a visit if you are into gardens and old pet cemeteries…. There is also a café, Avoca, which makes very tasty but light food.

Turistbusserne stopper her.

Dublin Zoo ligger.
