Good maps are essential to driving in Ireland. You will find a wide selection of maps, and most of them are alright. A big full Ireland driving map is great and easy to use, but often minor but very important roads will not be on them. Signs are not great in Ireland at all, and it takes patience and a good co-driver to find the right way out in the countryside especially. You might want to consider buying area maps called Discovery Series for the areas that you know you are going to visit. A piece of good advice is buying maps from the Ordnance Survey (OSi), which is the public map department.
